With the number of runners in our society growing everyday, the need to supply quality races at all distances are in high demand. Local clubs and organizations are now realizing the value of hosting a running race. The options are endless and local runs are starting to transform into annual classics with larger crowds in attendance. More people outside of the running community are flocking to attend these races. Who can deny the opportunity to support a charitable cause and get a little exercise in the process? Still, it can be challenge for any newcomer, or just a running guru traveling to a new location to find a local race. Runners of all types, ages, and abilities should not fear the lack of events. There are plenty of 5K's, 10K's, half marathons and even marathons out there and most importantly they should not be hard to find. It is as simple as exploiting all the options available. Here are some of the most common ways to find a local running race.
Local sporting goods stores
Scan the phone books for local sporting goods stores or running specific shops. Local clubs or organizations that hold running races will usually post their events at these locations. Another benefit is that these stores will usually have race forms available and a store representative capable of signing up and registering prospective runners. This is a great way to get out into the community and support local fundraisers.
The Worldwide Web
The internet is another great asset available for runners, especially those who plan on traveling to some place new and would like to know the kind of races that will be ongoing during their visit. Try a universal running website that posts annual races all over the world, or search specifically for the area you plan on visiting. There are several notable races that attract several of the nation's top running enthusiasts. Planning ahead may just guarantee you a spot on one of these popular events.
Ask around
Word of mouth is still a good way to find out information. With today's highly technological society, we tend to shy away from this traditional method. Phone a friend who is into the running scene and you might be surprised with the results. This will also be a good way to network with local runners and maybe even get the opportunity to jump on some weekly runs. So, if you plan on attending a running race, don't be afraid to tackle the situation head on. The thrill of competing can become really addictive, but don't forget to have fun in the process.
