The one are that the management of most organizations need the most training on is communications. It is ironic that when it comes to communication most of these men and women in management are lacking in the simple skills needed to effectively and productively communicate. There are several important factors to being a good communicator. First you have to communicate. There have been many managers in my business experience that do not take the time to communicate. Emails and other communication sent to them goes unanswered. They are neglectful at returning voice mails or replying to messages given to them. So, the first lesson that must be learned is simply: Do it! Communicate!

However, it is important to know how to communicate properly. To do this, you need to know your audience. Sometimes this is easy if you are just communicating with one person and you know them well. Other times this may be more difficult if you are communicating with someone you do not know very well. This is where you choose your words very carefully. Unless it is necessary to return a phone call or a call would be more productive because of the specific situation, you will probably benefit more from written communication. Written communication allows you to read over what you have written and think about it, rather than a quick reply back as may be given in a phone conversation, and may later bring regret.

With written communication you need to consider how is the best way to communicate. If it is one person or a small group, you may find email to be your best resource. Just remember email etiquette and that emails can become permanent records. So be careful what you say and always remain professional. Emails can even be used in court cases, so do not say something that can be used against the company even if you think the person you are sending it to can be trusted.

If you need to communicate to a large group or possibly even the entire organization, a form of mass communication is best. This can be done in several ways. The best way to do this and keep ecologically friendly is to do it electronically. If your company or team that needs to receive the communication has a website, this is ideal. Most companies have an employee site and even have breakout pages on that site for different teams or divisions within the organization. Utilizing this resource for mass communications is a great tool that sends the right message to the employees about saving not only our environment but saving
