I write this only 10 minutes after my precious daughter made her last Girl Scout cookie sale. I'm very proud of her she did a great job. Unfortunately, just five minutes ago I caught the video on FoxNews.com about the upcoming "NEW" Girl Scouts. Have you seen it yet? Find it and watch it. You'll be shocked.
I thought the Girl Scouts had learned their lesson a few years ago when a boycott was launched against their annual cookie sale. It turned out they were accepting money and resource materials from Planned Parenthood. (Now that's just the kind of organization you want sponsoring your daughter's extracurricular activities.) Anyway, they dumped Planned Parenthood as a sponsor. And that's exactly what should have happened.
Well, the Girl Scouts have had a change of heart. Apparently, they are not as popular as they would like to be, so they are going 21st century. Instead of the old fashioned, skill building exercises of my youth, they will now be focusing on issues affecting today's girls topics like teen pregnancy, positive body image and cutting. Hmmmmm.
I'm livid. You see, I became a Brownie leader this year and have really enjoyed the time I have spent with my daughter and her classmates. I have loved planning the meetings and introducing the girls to nature, art, cooking and community service. And the girls have had a blast! How do I explain to these 7 and 8 year olds why I can't be their leader anymore?
Don't get me wrong, I'll finish the year because I committed to it a value I learned as a Girl Scout years ago. But I won't be a part of an organization that has taken it upon itself to indoctrinate young girls into the new, anything goes society we seem so determined to establish in this country. I read the press release/article from the Christian Science Monitor and it all sounds very nice and innocent. But if there is one thing we've learned over the past few weeks, it's that we can't protect our children enough. Some topics should be introduced and discussed within the family. No organization, no matter how well meaning, can replace parents.
Today it's the Girl Scouts, what's next? The public school system has already fallen prey to the liberal agenda. We had decided before my daughter was one year old that she would never step foot in a public school and that's when we were still living in the mid-west. (If you don't live in Massachusetts, you might not know what is going on here. Same sex marriage is part of the Kindergarten curriculum.) You can't let your kids watch TV unsupervised. And try going to the movies. I even read books before my daughter does if I can't find a friend who has already read it!
Why can't kids be kids? Is a Girl Scout meeting really the best place to discuss such issues listed above? I hear the argument that many of these girls are not getting support and information at home, and they need to get it somewhere. But I counter that the family that gets their daughter involved in Girl Scouts is already a supportive and informed family. This is not the right place for these discussions.
So at the end of the year, I'll be quitting the Girl Scouts, again. It's ruined for my daughter and I. And when my cookies arrive, I'm sending them to the foodbank.
