Director: John Hamburg (director of Along Came Polly)
Running time: 105 minutes.
Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) proposes to his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones) and she promptly has a conference call with all her friends to tell them the exciting news. But when she suggests Peter calls his guy friends, he realizes he doesn't really have anyone to call that would be bothered. He has male colleagues in his job as a real estate agent, but they're not really what you could call friends.
In fact one of them, Tevin Downey (Rob Huebel) is a downright pain in the neck, constantly patronizing Peter and trying to muscle in on a big contract he's got to sell Lou Ferrigno's house. (Lou Ferrigno has a small part in this, appearing as himself). Peter begins to realize that the people he gets on with best are the women at work, and Zooey's women friends.
Peter runs in to the problem of who to ask to be his best man. It doesn't seem to occur to him to ask his gay brother Robbie (Andy Samburg). Eager to help, the popular Robbie takes on the role of adviser, telling him how to form friendships with men, and Peter launches on a series of man-dates', with sometimes disastrous consequences.
Then he meets Sidney Fife (Jason Segel) and find they have an unexpected rapport. But Sidney is a single guy, and it isn't long before he starts making big demands on Peter's time. The problem is, can Peter's close relationship with Zooey survive the arrival of a new best friend?
I'm getting to like Paul Rudd after seeing him in Role Models and The Forty Year Old Virgin. He plays the part of a nicer guy in this, although his character is not so confident. Peter is one of those men who gets on well with women but doesn't fit in with the testosterone- driven, swearing, porn-watching, camping-in-the-woods kind of men he is surrounded by. His role in this is not as funny as previous roles, although there is humour in it. He's more awkward, trying a bit too hard to fit in, and failing embarrassingly.
Rashida Jones is incredibly pretty, and plays a sweet nice American girl who loves to gossip with her friends. She is there in the background, but really not a major part in the film as it's really about Peter's relationship with Sidney.
Jason Segel I found hard to like, but maybe we weren't supposed to like him so much. There's something about his face that isn't quite trustworthy, and he just misses being attractive. He plays a really carefree, grungy guy, who doesn't care if his dog messes on the footpath, a
