Freelance writing to those dreaming of making a living that way means they have the ability to set their own hours while picking and choosing the jobs they wish to take. The idea that you can pick and choose what to write, when to write and who to write for is an illusion that some have about the world of freelancing. In reality freelance writing is a lot different than the meaning of about it.
Freelance writing in reality take someone with the dedication to live their dream. While the background in education involving journalism and writing courses can go a long way they are something that you don't think about needing when you consider writing for a living. Education should extend beyond writing in some cases depending on the requirements of the writing job you're trying to get. Whether you wish to write for print publications or focus on online endeavors will have an effect on just how much you make and how far you go as a freelancer.
When attempting to freelance and trying to send out your writing to traditional print magazines and newspapers you will have to check their guidelines to ensure your articles it within their standards. You often have to send inquiry letters prior to sending them your work, you will also find that to get rejection letters a work that you bought with amazing. Then there is a freelance writing on the Internet which is a different ballgame altogether from your traditional magazine.
When you attempt to do freelance writing on the Internet they are will thousands of sites set up for freelancers some of which require membership fees and some of which do not. The site allows you to post your articles to earn money from them, as an attempt to sell them or usage rights to them or allow you to bid on projects for which you must provide writing samples and hope getting the job. It is not uncommon for these sights to take commission fees from the payment you received from work performed because that is how they make their money and continue to provide to a place to find work.
There are no guarantees with anything and freelance writing is no exception. The rate you receive for your writing will vary from site to site, publisher to publisher and assignment to assignment. When you first begin as a freelance writer you have to slowly build a reputation and sometimes work for wages that come out far below the minimum in order to prove yourself. You can spend weeks with no work at all despite having completed previous jobs that the buyer was more than satisfied with and gave you high praise for.
Freelance writing takes both dedication and determination. Before you leave your job to devote yourself to writing full-time you should be prepared for the possibility that your career will not take off immediately. Having a backup plan and savings in place just in case it takes you longer to get started in the freelance writing career than you originally planned will help to keep you from becoming discouraged and giving up on the efforts altogether. Although when you begin to see results from your efforts you'll find a yourself wondering why you ever did anything besides freelance writing.
