Reflections: You are who God says you are

by Barry Mccormick

Created on: April 21, 2009

I had to keep my composure one time in an worship service or else I would have been in floods of tears. Not because of the worship, but because something God asked me to do. My friend was standing in tears, normally I would have left anyone who was having an experience with God to have it alone but God told me to go over and talk to her. So I did.

This was where I had to be strong. I asked my friend what was wrong, first she said nothing. More tears came and then eventually she lightened the load and let me know what was up. She told me, "I feel as though I'm worthless, insignificant. I feel as though if I wasn't here it wouldn't matter and no one would notice." What do you do in that situation? Well a bug hug, a meaningful one, goes a long way, and sincere honest encouragement. I told exactly what she meant to me. But as I gave her a hug and prayed with her God sent words rushing into my head for her which I later wrote down and gave to her. It resulted in a poem called

Child of The King.

In this fast-food cultured world in which we live it is easy to loose sight of alot of things. It is easy to forget our purpose. It is easy to forget who we are. With so much stress placed on us at times we even forget our identity and completely forget who we are. As Christians we are not immune from this.

More and more than ever, in this time God has placed us in, people struggle with their identity. They loose sight of themselves and when that happens, there is no hope. That is why I was nearly reduced to tears when my friend confessed how she felt. I had to do everything in my power, with God's strength, to give her back that hope.

Being Christians our lives are hidden now with Christ in God, the old has gone the new has come, we are saved, sanctified and redeemed, yet we forget that so often. Our identity is in Christ. We are children of the king because we have been bought for and adopted by the Father of all creation, the King of the universe. When you think about it, it really does blow you away.

I think the problem for a lot of Christians is that they simply do not know exactly what their identity is in Christ. So lets think about a few of them. The bible says because of the adoption we have received through our salvation we are co-heirs with Christ. A Royal Child, a heavenly heir. That in itself is hard to fathom. To think that the God who is supreme over all wants me and chose me specifically to be apart of His family. I am His child, I am adopted in, He is my father
