A fountain pen has a special professionalism and appearance that many pens on the market today just do not have.  While not as common as they were in the past, many still rely on them for their smooth writing and professional appearance. But with fewer people using them today, how does someone unfamiliar with fountain pens pick the best? Here are three companies who make fountain pens and three factors to look at when choosing the best pen for you.

Montblanc

This company is world renowned for its fountain pens. They are sold all over the world and can be researched on their Internet site. Pens range in appearance from basic black to diamond encrusted. Prices range according to what type of pen is purchased.

Waterman

Waterman sells a large collection of pens. Their website has a shop locater so buyers can find a store near them that sells the pens. They are sold in many towns and cities in the United States and many countries around the world.

Pilot

Pilot makes a fountain pen with a price tag of around one hundred fifty dollars. This pen, called the "Vanishing Point," and has a nib that extends when a button is pressed on the side of the pen. This pen is highly rated by customers who have purchased it and is sold by several companies on the Internet including Amazon.

When purchasing your fountain pen, here are some characteristics to look for.

Nib

The nib is the end of pen that comes in contact with the paper. The nib can be made of many different materials including gold, steel, or platinum. Gold is the considered the best type of nib for the way it feels as it glides across the paper. Platinum is also becoming a more popular choice, but is less affordable than gold.

Weight

Fountain pens also come in several different weights. New writers should look for lighter pens. Heavier fountain pens can be difficult to write with and can cause strain to the hand and wrist. After your hand becomes used to a light fountain pen, you can graduate up to a medium or heavier weight pen.

Ink

Fountain pens are not designed to be disposable. The ink is to be replaced as it is used up. Water based ink is the best. An excellent water based ink is sold by Noodler's Ink. This type of ink is designed to stand up to the test of time. It comes in several colors.

A fountain pen is a personal choice, but this choice can be difficult for those not familiar with the pen. Use the tips and the websites above to find a pen that is perfect for you.
