cities, used this third dimension of height to pack everryone in. There were four million people in Manhattan at that time, he told me. It came out to something like over 10,000 people per square mile living there. As we finished the last three hours driving to Riverhead, I asked my dad why we took thirty days to get here. "You remember all the friends we saw, and family, like Grandpappy and Billy, your cousin, and your grandmother (dad's mom)?

"Yes," I replied.

"It's important to visit your family when you can. No one lives forever, you know."

I thought about that for awhile. Yes, I loved the visiting with family and friends; that was one of my favorite parts. Still, it intrigued me that the geography of the United States was so large, so vast, and it made me wonder something else. How did this country hold together in the Civil War, or even in WWI and WWII? So geography is useful in not only mathematics and history, but also in the social norms we make for ourselves and hold ourselves to. Sure, there are so many hiding places that escaped convicts can make use of. But the phrase, well-mended fences make good neighbors is true. It just means that mutual resperct is important for the cohesion of our nation. If we ever lose that to a greater degree, the geography of the nation will change drastically, politically and otherwise. Hopefully, the border disputes of our minds will not get that out of hand.
