For a huge number of students in Higher Education, University is the best time of their lives. However, every year there are many students who do not feel the same way and end their experience early, or transfer to another institution. To get the most out of your University experience there are four key considerations to ensure you get right.
The course should be your first priority. Over 3000 of yearly tuition fees means you deserve the best education to suit your needs. Think carefully about whether you are better suited to a practical or academic course. There are so many courses on offer to modern day students it can seem a bit daunting trying to narrow down your options. Visit as many open days as possible, talk to the tutors and current students. Getting on with your tutor and being certain they know what they are talking about is always useful! Look at course breakdowns in detail. Make sure the modules and assesment methods will suit your learning style and benefit your aspirations. There's no point accepting an offer on a great course if it doesn't cover the specialisations you are interested in.
University is not soley educational; it is a life experience. Ask and research about extra curricular activities, societies and local facilities. University gyms almost always offer discounts and yearly deals for students and most Universities will even offer you funding if you want to start a club that isn't already running. The nightlife and social activities are very important. Whether you enjoy clubbing or going to the cinema, check out the local area to see what's around. Clubs and bars frequently have drink deals and if there is a substantial student population, will probably host a weekly student night where entry and drinks are reduced. You are going to be living near your University for at least three years; make sure you're going to have fun outside the classroom too.
Location is not as big a deal as most people make out. Choosing the right University is much more important than being in a fashionable city or staying near your friends. A lot of students find it hard living away from their families and friends. However, the indepedence of living alone is liberating. Universities are either city based or have a seperate campus with everything in one place. Find out where the nearest supermarket and other amenities are. Most Universities discourage students from bringing cars so if you really need to bring your car with you, work out where you are going
