Will there ever be a chance for world peace?

by Joshua Greene

Created on: April 21, 2009

Cicero once said "The name of peace is sweet, and the thing itself is beneficial, but there is a great difference between peace and servitude. Peace is freedom in tranquillity, servitude is the worst of all evils, to be resisted not only by war, but even by death." World Peace has a 99% chance of never occuring (I will explain the 1% later). The fault lies with humanity. It lies in the very nature of being a human being. As an individual, you are going to naturally look out for your own needs before you look out for the needs of others. That is why some people own bigger houses, bigger cars, and go to better schools, because everyone wants the best for themselves.

World peace has always been a "what if?" scenario. Anyone who has ever been quoted on world peace, has ever been in a demonstration for peace, or has done anything to stand up for world peace, has always basically said the same thing. "We should all just be more tolerant of each other." They're exactly right. We should. But we aren't. And we won't. It would be great if we all could just talk and get along. We could all just be happy on our train to utopia, but sadly this is the real world. Corruption and evil exist. In a perfect world you can convince people not to commit a crime or to get along by talking to them, but this isn't utopia and talking simply does not work with some people. It's just not in human nature to be a complete pacifist to someone intruding upon your interests. You are naturally going to get upset and quite possibly take some sort of action.

World peace in almost certainty will never occur for two key reasons within human nature. Firstly, everyone views things differently, and thats perfectly normal. Country A can think that there are human rights abuses in Country B and choose to take action, or Country A can believe that certain economically valuable fertile land belongs to them while Country B would contend otherwise. In both these cases an escalation in tension will arise between the two nations. Also, there will always rebellions and civil disturbances that could outbreak to civil wars. If a group or faction of individuals believes that the current regime of their government is corrupt or intruding on their lifestyle, they will contest that regime in some way.

The second aspect of human nature that will almost certainly deny any chance at world peace is the fact that every human being can be corrupted to some extent, and as we all know, power corrupts greatly. This is why we
