For every religion, there must be guidance. It is observed in the study of religion that written text is a significant source to enhance the experiential dimension of religion. Explanations of practical use and other-worldly meaning provides stability and wholeness for the individual. There are many books to look to for well-rounded knowledge in the realm of Wicca.

For the Wiccan beginner, To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver Ravenwolf, is a great start. This book is a wonderful guide for those who are new to and interested in becoming part of a nature-based religion. While there are a vast number of texts on the subject, this particular book serves as a foundation for basic instructions to those who have not yet experienced the craft. Remember, this book is specific to beginners. It elaborates on altar setup and required tools, and so on, and even delves into more advanced topics, such as astral projection.

As a follow-up, Silver Ravenwolf writes To Stir a Magick Cauldron. This book gets more in depth into conjuring spells and other powers. More importantly, it is a great intermediary aid in both self- and Wiccan discovery.

Silver Ravenwolf is also author of various spellbooks. Silver's Spells for Prosperity, Silver's Spells for Protection, and Silver's Spells for Love are explanatory in just what they say they are. Each of the three books provide information on incense, oil, and candle rituals, as well as particular spells that enhance the subject of focus.

Scott Cunningham is the author of: Wicca - A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, and: Living Wicca - A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. The first book focuses on the benefits of being a solitary witch, as well as the beginner basics of Wiccan practice. The second book emphasizes Wicca, not as just a religion, but as a deeply spiritual way of life. While the recommended books by Silver Ravenwolf are more practical in nature, Scott Cunningham focuses on more of a reflective view.

Janet Farrar is another author that is well worth the read. A Witches' Bible: The Complete Witches' Handbook is a great reference on rituals, ceremonies, and more. Although it is geared toward the Wiccan practitioner involved in a coven, it provides detailed information on the various Wiccan customs that are applicable to all.

I would say that if there was just one book to have regarding Wicca, it would hands-down be Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft, by Raymond Buckland. This is a traditional must-have for every practicing Wiccan, regardless of level of personal experience. While every religion has various denominations, so does Witchcraft. This book provides the fundamental commonalities of all denominations and emphasizes openminded wisdom. Raymond Buckland is credited with the transition of Wiccan to the United States over twenty years ago.

Of course, there are a great deal of books that are wonderful Wiccan resources aside from these top ten. I would like to mention that The Craft - A Witch's Book of Shadows by Dorothy Morrison, as well as the Encyclopedia of Wicca and Witchcraft by Raven Grimassi are beneficial reads. Starhawk is another author of well-received written texts.

The important thing for any practitioner of any experience level is to be open-minded. Be open to read all manners of texts and this will enhance spirituality and mental awareness. You never know when that one sentence from the most unsuspecting book will provide the most insight in life.
