Running a marathon is an enormous undertaking that requires a great deal of time, energy and commitment. But an aspiring runner with the utmost dedication, who lacks the proper gear, is a recipe for failure. There are certain necessities that every marathon runner needs to ensure his best possible performance, whether you're at the back of the pack or a Kenyan elite.
Properly Fitted Shoes
Shoes are probably the most important piece of gear than any marathoner uses. Without properly fitted shoes, you not only run the risk aching feet and blistered toes, you could be setting yourself up for more a serious injury. Go to a running specialty store where you can have a gait analysis performed, "test drive" different running shoes and talk to experienced professionals to determine the best shoe is for you.
Running Socks
Running socks go hand in hand with good running shoes in keeping your feet healthy and pain-free. These socks are made with moisture-wicking material that prevent blisters, and are key when you're logging high miles during the course of your marathon training.
Running Clothes
Whether you're running a fall marathon and training in the summer, or running a spring marathon that requires training in the winter months, clothing is important in making sure you are comfortable, regardless of the temperature. Trial and error are the best way to ascertain what items work best for you in particular weather conditions, and it is something that you will be able to fine tune as your training progresses. Again, moisture-wicking clothing will allow for maximum comfort and minimize the possibility for chafing on those long runs. Don't forget the usefulness of hats, from a winter hat to a visor, and sunglasses in this category as well. Regardless of season, these items can be very helpful in protecting yourself from the elements.
Body Glide
Chafing is a subject that can cause even the most seasoned marathoner to stop dead in his tracks. If you've ever braved a marathon course on a rainy day, you might have come across a male runner with the dreaded bloody nipples as evident by looking at his running shirt. In order to avoid such a painful predicament, products like Body Glide are life savers. This product is used on areas that are prone to chafing to prevent it from occurring in the first place and are a must-have for any marathoner-in-training.
Fuel
When running long distances, your body cannot get by on breakfast alone, so marathoners replenish their bodies with products like
