Advertising is an important part of promoting companies of all sizes, ranging from small businesses to the largest of enterprises. Of course, the way that small business owners need to advertise their ventures is very different from the way that major, multinational corporations approach this important form of marketing communication. The effective use of advertising for small business involves figuring out how to reach the right people in the most cost effective manner possible.
Types of Advertising
Some forms of advertising that most small business owners should consider include:
Marketing Oriented Website The single most important form of advertising for most small businesses is a top notch, marketing oriented website. The good news is that getting a good website doesn't have to cost a fortune. Keep in mind that there's a difference between and informative website and one that is truly marketing-oriented. Make sure that the web designer you use has an understanding of Internet marketing in addition to being skilled at developing sites.
Pay Per Click Advertising Targeted pay for click advertising that reaches Internet users searching for targeted phrases in geographically appropriate areas can be very effective and inexpensive. With pay-per-click advertising, you pay only when someone click on your advertisement. If you've chosen where to place these ads wisely, you can direct highly targeted traffic to your website very inexpensively.
Yellow Page Advertising If your business is one that relies on local small business customers, you may benefit from advertising in the telephone book in your area. Keep in mind, however, that many modern consumers rely on the Internet to find suppliers, regardless of what type of business they are looking for. A presence in the telephone directory may be important for your business, but don't spend all of your advertising dollars there.
Media Advertising In some cases, media advertising can be advantageous for small businesses. These types of advertising include newspaper, magazines, radio, and television. If you choose to utilize this type of advertising, use a coordinated, campaign approach. Don't randomly place ads in response to sales calls from account executives. Approach this major expenditure in a very systematic manner.
Out of Home Advertising There are several forms of out of-home advertising, including billboards, mall and airport kiosks, and even restaurant bathroom posters. If you're trying to reach a transient population, this type of advertising can be effective. However, it often requires a lengthy commitment and can be expensive. Make sure it's the right way to reach your target audience before proceeding.
