Typically knowing how to travel for business is something learned through experience. The first few times you take-off for your business destination there are inevitable "why didn't I think of that " moments. But learning through the experience of others can be very helpful and reduce some novice mistakes. Here are some tips to help you through your trip.
First and foremost, expect the unexpected. Yes, that seems pretty general, and yes it is. But if you start out knowing that everything can go wrong, from too much traffic on the way to the airport, to the plane being delayed (or even worse canceled) to the airline losing your luggage, you will be one step ahead of the game.
Most of the frustration of business is travel is directly related to your flight and navigating the airport. Check-in for your flight on-line the day before your trip, this will save you time at the airport and give you the opportunity to select a "good" seat. Check your flight status before you leave your house, to make sure everything is still running on time. If it is not then you will still have time to call and make alternate plans.
If you have a connecting flight, check on-line for a map of that airport so you can estimate how much time it will take you to get from one gate to the next. Also be sure that your lay-over is at least 1.5 hours to accommodate for any airline delays.
Passing through the security check point takes time, some times too much time. Many airports now offer a line specifically for frequent travelers, look for the sign posted at the front to know which line to take. Also ask your company if they would be willing to pay the $199.00 for a CLEAR account. This service can be invaluable for reducing stress and moving quickly through security lines.
To make life easier, always carry your necessities on the plane with you and whenever possible, use a carry-on for all of your travel needs. Not checking a bag, will save you time, a precious commodity on most business trips. If you are not checking a bag, then once you arrive at the airport, you can proceed directly to your gate with out having to wait in line at the ticket counter. Once you disembark the plane you can head straight to your taxi and eliminate the anxiety and wait for your bag to be dumped onto the conveyor belt.
What are the necessities for your carry-one? For starters, a fresh change of clothes, your toothbrush and pre-moistened facial towels so you can freshen up once you arrive. You will also want to be sure
