Why hyper miling doesn't make any sense

wipers and air conditioners.

Going downhill is a free ride to the hyper miler. Shut off the engine and coast. It seems logical, but it is illegal in most, if not all states.

Discomfort

Most drivers don't care about the discomfort hyper milers put up with. It is, however, one reason you won't see a shift to hyper miling in the near future. Turn off the air conditioning and anything else that uses electricity. No lights, no defogger, no fan and no radio. And by the way, it doesn't matter if it is 95 degrees, roll those windows up because having them down uses more gas too.

Summary

Driving in a considerate, safe manner means you don't deliberately be an inconvenience to other drivers. Yet, hyper milers seem to feel they have as much right to their way of driving as anyone else has to theirs. Never mind the laws broken or the unsafe practices, push that MPG up to 100 and anything is worth it.

Can you achieve 145 MPG in a Honda Accord? Yes you can. Can you do it safely, legally and without inconveniencing everyone else on the road? No you can't.

It's more than inconvenience and safety though. It's that the vast majority of drivers on the road, regardless of fuel prices, are not willing to double the length of a trip, spend an hour planning it and then make that trip while risking a ticket or an accident.
