You believe education is important and want to donate some supplies to help a school in need. Excellent decision! Your donation will be appreciated, and you may be eligible for a tax deduction for your charity.
To make a donation to a school and to be eligible for a deduction on your state or federal taxes, there are some steps that you must take. Here you can find the information you will need to get started.
*How to donate.
#1 The school of your choice.
Because of rampant education budget cuts, schools across America are ready and often searching for donations. You can donate directly to the school. Just bag or box your donation up and deliver it to the school office. You may want to call first, however, and ask if what you want to donate is something they need. There may also be different school they might suggest if they have plenty of what you are donating. Chances are, the schools need everything you are willing to give. If you want to donate but don't have anything yet to donate, call the school administration office and ask what the school is in need of. By filling a specific need, you can become a hero if not a very appreciated donator.
# 2 The district of your choice.
If you don't have a specific school in mind that you would like to donate to, or if the school of choice cannot accept your donation for whatever reason, then you should contact the school district administration.
Every school will have specific needs and your donation may best be served by going through the school district. They can decide who is most in need. Most school districts will accept your donation or tell you who you can give it to if you call and ask.
# 3 Non-profit organizations.
There are a multitude of non-profit organizations that will do all the work for you when donating. If you don't have time or don't want to deal directly with the schools, this option will help you make the donation happen.
Don't know how to find a non-profit organization in your area? Here are some suggestions.
~City hall.~
When it comes to matters of the community in your city, there are offices with public services designed to assist you in your good will venture. They will have information on local non-profit organizations and charity groups that help your community. If you don't already know a school or district you wish to donate to, calling your city hall and asking for information about how to make donations to schools is a good start.
~Churches.~
Most churches are more than willing to either accept donations or help you find the right place to make your donation. You don't have to be a member to contact a church or make a donation and most are already working to help local schools. The larger churches will have the most options but smaller churches often have specialized services for local schools.
~The local fire department and police station.~
Yes, they put out fires and stop crimes, but they are also involved in their communities in many ways. Calling your local fire, or police department for information on how to go about making donations to schools in your community is a good idea if you don't know where to start. Make sure to call the regular telephone number and not the emergency number.
~Online.~
If you just want to donate to schools in general, there is a wealth of non-profit groups online who will take your donation. One example is Donors_Choose. This non-profit organization matches donors to schools in need. Also, try this Google_search for a list of various donation companies. Websites that end in .ORG are best since they are non-profit and you can be sure all of your donation will go to a school in need and not be kept by the company for profit.
#4 Donating for tax deductions.
Step 1.
Contact the local school district or the school district you would like to donate to and ask if there are any state tax credits for donations. A few states, such as Arizona, have tax programs that you can take advantage of offering up to 100 percent of your donations back as tax credit.
Step 2.
Get any required forms for tax credits from your local government, school district, or non-profit organization you are donating to before you make your donation. Without these forms and the information contained within, you may be ineligible for tax credit.
Step 3.
Make sure that wherever you are donating to can provide an itemized receipt of your donation. Itemized receipts are required for all of your donations in order to claim them on your federal tax 1040 Schedule A itemized deduction sheet.
~ When donating for tax deductions, keep in mind that smaller donations won't provide a large return. Some organizations may not provide itemized receipts on donations below a certain amount of goods, or if they are used goods. The best way to donate for tax credit is to stock up during the year then make your donation in one large sum.
There are many more options for donating, but these suggestions will get you started. Thank you for being a donor to education.
