Poetry: Children of divorce

My six year old looked up at me

And said "Mom why did Daddy go?

Was it because I didn't listen well or

I sometimes told him no?"

I said "Oh no, you're not to blame;

And there is nothing you have done

Your daddy loves you very much

And you will always be his son

"Then why," he said, "Was it you?

Just tell him how sorry you are.

Tell him mom so he'll come home.

Please before he gets too far."

I wish it were that simple

But the love has gone away

I used to think it would carry through

But illusions aren’t meant to stay

I take a deep breath and tell this child

He will be loved forevermore

By his mommy and his daddy

Just like he always was before

I place a kiss upon his cheek

And tuck him snuggly into bed

And before I turn out the light

"I love you too mom," is said

Love is absolutely meant

To be shared so unconditionally

I thank God each and every day

For what this little boy has taught me
