PETA always goes too far. I just went to their website and looked under the Boycott PetsMart section. I shake my head in disbelief at the false accusations that PETA has said about PetsMart. I am a former employee of PetsMart. I quit without notice, but it had nothing to do with how the pets were treated or how they were taken care of. I quit for personal reasons.
The store was always clean and the pets were always taken care of. I know because I worked in the pet care department. I would like it to be known that what PETA has posted on their site is malicious lies. Yes, they do keep sick animals in a back room where customers cannot see them, but it's only because they have received proper care from the vet...which is located in the store...the pets are being medicated and recuperating from their sicknesses.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Wet tail, it is a disease that small pets such as hamsters and gerbils get. One of the symptoms is dehydration. Other symptoms include diarrhea, lethargic behavior, vomiting and sadly death. If treated, like they are at PetsMart, they do recover. I have taken care of a few small pets that have contracted wet tail. It's not uncommon. Just like a baby being born with jaundice or premature or anything else that a baby can get...pets can get things too. We clean the cages on a regular basis and contrary to what PETA says, there is always water in the habitats for the pets to drink.
There have been many times where I have changed the water before schedule if it got to dirty. We also provide fresh fruits and vegetables to the vegetarians, birds and small pets. We take out the fresh food after four hours so it does not rot and make the pet sick. Like home pet owners, we feed and water twice daily and pick out the waste the pet makes. The article PETA features is a lie.
The pets at PetsMart ARE taken care of properly. We even clean the fish tanks every day! So, please, do not believe PETA and and try to get PetsMart to stop selling the pets. I do agree with one thing on the PETA page...concerning the military parrot Jose, a bird of that size should not be sold in a store like PetsMart. They do need at least four hours of interaction, and PetsMart employees do not have the time to interact with larger birds.
I do stand firmly when I say PETA needs to print the facts and not what they want you to see. Shame on you PETA! I say we should stop supporting PETA if they are going to stretch the truth and lie to get supporters. I am very much an animal lover and hate to see animals being treated inhumanely, but I will not support an organization that is based on lies.
