With each passing year it becomes harder and harder to come up with a birthday party theme that is "cool" for your kids. As a Mom of an almost 11 year old boy I was completely stumped on his last birthday in coming up with party ideas. For weeks him and I brainstormed, and kept coming back to the same basic idea: music! As a lover of all kinds of music, and an aspiring guitar and drum player, much of his time revolved around music and he wanted his birthday to as well! It was then that the Rock Star party idea was born in our family!
Time was limited in planning for the big day as it had taken us so long to come up with theme, but I began putting the plan into action right away. Our home was too small for the group of 20 rambunctious 10 to 12 year old kids so I rented a place near by that not only offered plenty of space but a fully equipped kitchen, a dance floor with flashing lights and a disco ball, and DJ equipment. At a cost of just $25 it was a steal! Once the location had been found we began invitations, which were guitars cut out of red poster paper with the details written on them. We also asked the guests to come dressed up rock star style, and to bring their invitation along with them to be entered into a draw for a door prize, which surprisingly everyone did! The costumes were so much fun. Girls came dressed in skirts and leggings with funky shirts, jewelry and accessories with clip in highlights in their hair and lots of bright make up. Some of the boys came dressed up in cool outfits with slicked back or spiked hair, cool ties, hats, and jewelry. What an awesome looking group they were!
The guests listened to music and chatted while they waited for everyone to arrive. Once all the guests were present the games began which included:
Musical chairs with a twist- Instead of just walking around a group of chairs, the chairs were scattered all over the dance floor and the kids danced until the music stop when they had to find a chair as quickly as possible, if not they were out!
Truth or Dare: I filled a hat with loads of questions and dares and had the kids sit in a circle as I went around and offered them the option of truth or dare. This game turned out to be an even bigger hit than I had thought it would. There was lots of laughs, blushing, and funny dares, and those who chose not to accept the dare or answer a question were out. The kids had a total riot!
Karaoke: Using the DJ equipment which was at the location and Cd's which I had made myself the
