Poetry: Nightmares

by Amelia Smith

Created on: April 19, 2009

As I walked through the door
tension hit me with an impact.

An impact

that almost knocked me down.
Slowly I took in my surroundings.
The shattered glass that crunched as I walked
along with the upturned chairs,

gave me a sudden realization.

Fear kicked my stomach

and adrenaline pulsed through my veins.
I spotted the empty bottle,

and began to panic.

I needed to escape, and fast,

but the overwhelming smell of alcohol warned me

the liquid-courage monster was close.

It pounced like a feline after prey,

and our battle begun.

Raging eyes met mine as I made one final attempt

to remove the beast from me.

Quick to my feet, I ran to the stairs.
The monster snapped at my heels as I climbed

what seemed to become a mountain.

We fought with the door,

until it collapsed.

It let out a whimper of defeat as I slipped the lock.
I had won the battle.
I had become the dominant predator
at least for the moment.
