I will never forget the look of despair in President Bush's eyes as he was told we were under attack. His soul came through at that very moment. He did what his heart told him to do from that second on. There was a reason he was elected our President, no matter how many did not give him the credit that was due him.
He, without a doubt, did what he needed to do to protect all Americans. He did not follow polls, wonder if he would be liked by the majority, and did not concern himself of his own needs. His need was to do all he could to make sure we were never attacked again. His legacy will be that since September 11th, not once did terrorists carry out another attack. This was nor due to luck, but the wisdom of a man who put country not politics first. In today's society, that is a rare occurrence.
Unfortunately, there are many who if in his circumstances would have cowered under the same pressure. Yet, these men and women have and continue to do all they can to mar his legacy. They would find ways to blame him if the sun did not shine. Yet, strength not words was needed to keep America safe.
President Bush is a man of honor and deserves our respect. Even today, as he is being torn apart by the news media and the new administration, he has the grace to be silent. His parents taught him well of the old adage of "sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never harm me."
He and his wife, Mrs. Bush, would be the type of people most Americans would want attending a party in their home. They have no airs about them and have respect for people in all walks of life.
If the 2000 election had turned out differently, where would our country be now? Of course, as his second term was coming to a close, the economy took a downturn. Yet, during his Presidency, many achieved the American dream of homeownership, jobs were plentiful, and the stock market was an all time high. What happened at the end of 2008 was not President Bush's fault. Weren't there many Senators and Congresspeople suppose to be doing the checks and balances? Why was one man blamed for the economic downfall? Instead of firing back, President Bush took the high road and took the blame.
May President Bush and First Lady Laura enjoy their time together. They are not looking to be in the limelight. President Bush did the best he could under the circumstances that arose during his tenure as President.
