I sew because I have inherited this gift from my mother. I enjoyed wearing the outfits my mother made for me, and this inspired me. I became so interested in sewing, by watching my mother, in no time; I was making my own clothes. Sewing is such a great art. There are numerous things I can make because I know how to sew. It is always an accomplishment to create different things. Creativity stimulates my imagination to use color and style to make beautiful things.

I do not need to buy ready made clothes and pay the full price. I can use my imagination to make many things to suit my own taste. If I need window curtains, I can buy plain ones, or make them myself and add fancy lace, trimmings, or beads that may look more attractive, to decorate our home. Other things I enjoy sprucing up are pillow cases, bed sheets, and hand towels. Sewing gives me a lot of ideas to make many beautiful things and is an enjoyable hobby that is very relaxing.

Not only can I fix many things in our home that need sewing and save money, but I can also earn money by sewing for others. There are always family members who need buttons on their shirts that fell off, or torn pants to be mended. Usually the clothes I buy ready made, need alterations of some sort. If a skirt is too long, I have to know how to cut it and hem it back, so it fits properly. I sew because I can do all these things without taking them to a tailor, and it is very rewarding when I know, I can take care of them myself.

Sewing has many more benefits. The more I can sew the more experience I acquire. Sewing can enhance creativity by using color and designs. I can use my artistic skills and imagination to draw my own designs according to the style I want, and then construct a pattern. From this pattern I can cut out the pieces of fabric and sew them together to make a perfect fitting garment, which I will enjoy wearing. One who can sew is able to make beautiful crafts to sell, and run their own alterations business, or have a store of their own, to display their items.

There are many opportunities to sew not only at home but in the working world as well. Besides being able to sew my own clothing, decorate our home with beautiful trimmings, I can aim for other areas of work that involve sewing: making crafts, patternmaking or becoming a fashion designer. There are many ways I can use my sewing skills to be creative.
