Earth Day activities for children

by Hortense Foster

Earth day was established April 22, 1970, today over 140 nations celebrate Earth Day. There are many activities for children as well as adults to take part in on Earth Day.

We the people of our nation are responsible and act as stewards to protect Mother Earth.

Earth Day Activities for children can be fun, education, adventurous, creative and a good time to go on a field trip. Spending time with your children celebrating Earth Day is quality time well spent.

To learn at a very young age how to be stewards to protect Mother Earth, will be beneficial for the children as well as our planet. Outlined below are several activities children can get involved in on Earth Day.

1. With the help of a team leader, plant a flower garden, vegetable garden or trees. Have each child plant, their favorite.

2. Recycle crayons, paper bags, card board boxes or make toys from them.

3. Have a story telling time about mother earth using books such as:

The Earth and I by Frank Asch

The Lax by Dr. Seuss

4. Collect trash such as egg cartons, plastic shopping bags and packing material. Now see what you can create from this recyclable material.

Educating our children at a very young age on how to protect our environment is the responsibility of us as parents, then as teachers and educators reaffirm this position for the sake of future generations to come. This is something we can pass on to our children and grandchildren, and I can't think of any inheritances, that would be more beneficial to our planet.

We want our children to have a beautiful heaven here on earth to enjoy with a green planet, clear streams of fresh cool running water, fish, magnificent trees, birds, bees and butterflies. Get involved in activity in your neighborhood and involve your children in these activities. These activities can be as simple as picking up trash on your streets, or planting, or leading volunteer groups on field trips. You can make them enjoyable and interesting by pointing out different plants, butterflies, birds, and wild life.

A beautification project for a road side area would be a great project for children lead by adults. By using a mixture of bright and vivid colors, these plants would attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies, what better way to create a heavenly place for earth day.

We as adults owe it to teach our children through interesting and education means, how to be the best stewards for our earth as they can be. On evenings and weekends get

Involved, get out there lets do our part by educating our children.

The future generation as they walk on earth with its healthy environment will be forever grateful to their ancestor's forethought of the future and measures they took to protect this great nation of ours.
