Buying the right running trainers is hard. There are so many different brands and styles available in the market place its hard to know where to start. Is it as simple as the right size? Is it just getting the right style for your style and distance? Is it all about cushioning? I would say that all of these need to be considered when choosing the best type of running shoes.
Size:
Don't assume that you finding just the right shoe size is enough. Make sure that you get measured correctly, including width and also see if someone can find out how your foot arches. This will help as different brands will offer different width, also if you have a high arching foot then you will need to consider getting more cushioning in the middle.
It is advisable to make sure you can get measured correctly. Larger Sports shops may offer this service, but if not then you should be able to get this at a local shoe shop - making sure to ask for width too - then you will have an idea of what you need to look for.
Cushioning:
This is very important. First things first you have to make sure the cushioning is in the right place for you feet. Then also you need to consider if there is sufficient cushioning for your experience and distance. If you are setting out running then trainers with good cushioning are a must. The constant pounding on your legs from running could cause short and long term injury if you aren't careful.
For the more experience running then less cushioning is necessary if you specialise in shorter distances. You can generally find good shoes that are designed for short, middle or long distances. So consider this in your decision too.
Accessories:
It is not just about the right shoes. Most people will blame their trainers on rubbing, blisters and cuts, but it may also have something to do with socks that you have chosen. Thick socks are not advisable, think cotton socks generally create the least friction and they also allow for a snugger fit around the trainer's inners.
Insoles can also be handy for added cushioning and also for aiding in creating the correct fitting. (not to mention in odour control)
Speak to other runners too. Ask them about brands they have found good and also about their size / width. There is nothing like a first hand review of someone else's road test.
Good luck, also, remember! When you are trying out a new pair of trainers, start using them on the shorter slower runs. Don't automatically go straight into a 20 miler. You need to break the shoes in and soften them up.
