Looking at it from the long-term perspective and religious point of view, you are always better off with the truth. If you are truthful, people will be more likely to forgive you regardless of what you do and still maintain some respect you. If you lie to others and won't acknowledge the truth, you will simply infuriate them once and for all. On top of that, if you are caught lying only once, you are no longer considered a trustworthy person.

Your lies will be discovered sooner or later and your reputation will be at stake. Not to mention that lying destroys the heart of the intimacy within a relationship. Denying the truth can help us short term but it can be damaging and unhealthy for us in the long run. Sooner or later we will be confronted with the truth as our consciousness is always working in the interest of the truth.

It is better for us to learn to accept the truth and learn from it than to live in lies. If you are in a relationship and somebody is hiding the truth from you, you will automatically start feeling suspicious about this person. Slowly but surely, you will start loosing your trust in him or her which will eventually lead to a break-up of your relationship.

If you were a patient, would you not prefer to hear the truth regardless of how harsh it may sound? For example, if you are suffering from a dangerous disease, it is easier for you to fight for your life if you know exactly what you are suffering from. Knowing the truth will activate your natural defense mechanisms and equip your body to fight the dangerous disease unlike when you are not told the truth. Let's assume that you are a caring mental health professional. It is in yours and your clients best interest to be truthful.

Honesty is the best way forward regardless of how harsh it may sound. You can get by with lies for a short period of time but it will not do you any good on a longer term basis. The scarry things about telling lies is that people start believing into them. This happens because they keep repeating the lies and their brain is simply forced to memorize those lies. This explaines distorted types of personalities such as psychopaths. Thus, you are better off telling the truth.
