Depression is one of the most lethal things a person can ever experience. A person can go from being on top of the world, being extra productive and happy and social to falling into a rut where he or she gets nothing accomplished, doesn't care about doing anything and loses all motivation to live life. There doesn't always appear to be a concrete set of reasons for why this happens. In fact, many times it takes people completely off guard and out of nowhere, taking them down before they can figure out what hit them.
The biggest thing that depression does is take away from a person's motivation to get things done. This in itself is the biggest way that depression affects the way people deal with each day. A person who would formerly be happy to get things done, strongly motivated to do their work or go have fun with others can become apathetic and careless, unwilling to do anything, and uninterested in things that may have just previous seemed like fun.
This can also lead people to underperform. At work, people might get less done, not do work with as much quality as before, or may not even get work done at all, depending on how severe the case may be. Depression can be incredibly detrimental to anyone's work, because it feels like a wall set up between that person and their goal. Coming from personal experience, even a person's most favourite things to do seem like chores. During some of the lowest points of my depression, I couldn't bring myself to write, and writing is pretty much my life, more than just a hobby.
Depression can also severely lower a person's self esteem, so while they may feel undermotivated, they may also feel that anything they do isn't good enough, and that they as a person are not good enough, which can spiral into something worse and worse as time goes on. Sometimes even when I pushed myself to write, even if I didn't feel like it, I would have a severe negative bias about anything I did, whenever I did it. It felt like an incredile chore to get anything done, and when it was done it felt like it was a terrible piece of work.
Depression can easily ruin a person's daily routine, and have harsh impacts on them as a person if it continues on for too long. It can take any person by surprise and practically prevent them from getting anything done or performing very well, which can have negative impacts on their career, family and social life.
