We long for purpose. As human kind we are driven by what we believe our purpose is. In worldlyterms you may view someone's purpose as of more importance or significance than another's. But, as a body of believers in an redeeming and merciful God, what is that purpose which should motivate, inspire and stir us into action?
The churches primary purpose on earth is to testify of the greatness of God, show His love and be a channel of His mercy and grace. It is clear throughout the Bible that God's chosen people, the Israelites and now the Church, were set apart from all the other peoples of the earth to be an example. God has chosen and ordained the Church to be the city on a hill which simply can not be hidden. And every aspect of the Church's witness, which is it's purpose, is built on the high standards of the example that God wants us to be.
Showing the greatness of God can sometimes be a hard task, since we are only human. However God wants us to be a witness and testify of that greatness. The great commission tells us to go into all the world and baptise them. Jesus Himself says greater works than these we will be able to do. God not only has given us the task of testifying of His greatness but also the ability. An ability we should be harnessing.
Now great signs and wonders are not the only way in which we can show how great God is. Love can do that also. "By this will all men know that you are my disciples if you have love one for another;" "Love your neighbour as yourself." Love is at the top of God's agenda for the Church. If the Church loved with the Love God has detailed in the Bible, a love that is: patient; kind; doesn't boast; selfless (1Corinthians 13) the impact and witness of the Church would multiply exponentially.
Love is about relationship. And God created us because His desire is to have relationship with us, and He wants us to desire that towards Him in return. The Godhead is about the relationship between the Triune God. Relationship is important. How we relate to others in love is how we will be able to convey and display the love of God even if it is only just a reflection.
What we love and care about tells alot about us. And God calls us to stand up for those who are hurting, to be the voice for those who have none, to provide for the poor and needy. Now if we do not love with the Love God desires us to love with then all or some of those things wont matter to us. We will happily pass people in the street hungry and homeless, we will overlook
