Should the government be cutting funding for elementary schools

As we move into this phase of economic tourmoil in our country, the last thing that should be suffering is elementary school funding. As a parent and someone who has always believed in the importance of eduation, I feel it is unjust that our elementary students, teachers and staff must suffer such great losses in funding.

A childs formative years begin in elementary school, and to keep cutting funding to the schools across the United States makes one wonder just how much the government cares about the future of our children. All children in the United States must attend school, whether public, private, alternative or home school. Therefore, the government should make it possible for the teachers and students to receive success at this level by finding other areas to cut funding.

The government has set into place testing requirements that are not only supposed to give an indicator of how much the children are learning, but also if the teachers are being effective. In essence, these tests have become the cornerstone for the government to determine if a school is worthy of government funding to continue educating the children.

I believe this is not the way to rate teachers or students. It has placed an unnecessary strain on teachers and administrators across the United States, and because our teachers have begun to focus on students passing State tests, they can no longer focus on the childrens understanding of the fundamentals in education.

As the government continues to cut funding from elementary education teachers, parents and staff try their best to find ways to keep the school supplied with the fundamentals needed for children; paper, pencils, pens, and other supplies needed throughout the year. These cuts in funding have also reduced the amount of books children are able to use.

Most kids are given xeroxed copies of handouts to do their homework on. No longer are they receiving workbooks to take home to work out of, nor read. There should be no question as to why our children are not able to compete globably with children of other countries when it comes to education. The answer is staring us in the face; our government has attacked our children at the lowest level, and for this, our children and the future of our country is suffering.

Hopefully in the future, our government will find other ways to cut funding instead of taking from the foundation which builds upon our childrens futures.
