Tips for preparing in the event of emergencies and natural disasters

Surviving a natural disaster depends on how prepared you are.

Hopefully, you will never be faced with a natural disaster. Knowing what to do and having the right emergency kit, could mean the difference between life and death, for you and you family.

Form your emergency plans and train your family. Have mock disaster test runs. If and when something happens, you need the peace of mind that your family will know how to find each other.

Your utilities will likely be the first to go down when disaster strikes. Make sure you have plenty of bottled water and non perishable food supplies.

Make a list of every possible thing that you think you and your family will need to survive.

1. Candles

2. Food and water

3. Blankets

4. Crank or battery operated radio

5. You should have cash on hand. In the event of power failures, your banks and all atm's will likely be inoperative.

6. Bandages and antiseptics

7. If you have pets, stock up on their food too
8. You should have your barbeque ready to go with a full propane tank. You can cook almost any meal on the barbeque.

If a natural disaster occurs, the infrastructures in your area may go down. Make sure your family is in a state of readiness. You may only have to tough things out for a few days, but it may be weeks before things become normal again.

You might consider purchasing a generator. The investment will be well worth it. In the event the power goes out, a small generator will keep your fridge and freezer operating.

When you take the necessary precautions, before a disaster happens, you will be ready to help yourself and your neighbors.

As a safety precaution, don't let your neighbors know you have stockpiled for any emergency. People may become desperate during the disaster and this can make them do things that are outside the norm. A person, who would never think of harming you for your food or water, might take the risk to try and save their own family.

If you own a business, consider putting bars on all windows and doors. When the hydro goes out, your alarm system will be useless. Looting is a major concern when a disaster strikes a town or city. It is wise to give yourself the added comfort of keeping your inventory safe.

We tend to get complacent and think that nothing serious will happen in our city. It only takes a few minutes of your time to make your list and purchase your emergency survival kit. Hopefully, you will never have to make use of it.

Remember to stay calm. Panic will not help you or your family. Be patient with police and ambulance services. They will be working around the clock to help the people in your area.
