Poetry: Love & darkness

by Darren Prine

Created on: April 17, 2009

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve awoke, a sense of certain doom,

no amount of heartache, pain or loss prepares for the depth of this day's gloom.

A fear envelops which he can't escape, it chills him to the bone,

a darkened intuition that his heart has lost its home.

Anxiety is steadfast, heartbeat stills and he begins to shake,

unknown to him, he's anchored to a bedrock that's about to break,

Could it all be a psychosis, could it all be in his head,

in moments he'll be cognizant his reality has fled.

As truth reveals, first numbness, then his pain, it radiates,

he witnesses his heart, his home, escape through unlatched gates.

His love, esteem and sense of self were built upon a lie,

a soulless vessel, mocked by love, he goes to sleep to die.

Death shows him no compassion nor will not wash his pain away,

He moves on like the living dead onto another darkened day.
