Organic cleaning products can be a great benefit to many families. In a large family like mine, little dirt-stained handprints adorn doors, light switches and glass windows. It can be a lot of work cleaning these telltale signs of playing children, but when done with chemicals, like bleach, we can put harmful fumes in the air.
Have you ever had the experience of cleaning in a small space, a bathroom perhaps? More than once, I've mixed different chemicals and created a type of gas that had me gasping for air, and looking for the nearest open window. Using different cleaners for different surfaces, can be dangerous for our lungs and expensive. With small children in the house, and ones willing to do chores for money, organic cleaning products can leave us feeling healthy, wealthy and wise.
Recently, I made the change to organic cleaning products, and I'm impressed with how well they work. Many of us think organic products don't really kill germs or make sinks sparkle, so we stick with what we know. With many companies getting in on the organic bandwagon, competition is putting muscle behind the organic labels.
Many organic companies use patented formulas to enhance their cleaning products. Others infuse surface cleaners with scented oils that smell good and double as astringents. One of these oils is Thyme. It has a pleasing scent and when mixed with other organic liquids, can actually kill bacteria just as well as bleach. A side benefit is that your clothes won't get any bleach marks on them. I have many articles of clothing with bleach stains ranging from tiny spots, to large blots.
Bleach isn't the only culprit in the chemical cleaning game. I've used full-strength ammonia to clean tile and grout and I used to love using a certain product specifically for toilet bowls, sinks and showers. The problem with these chemicals is that they can actually ruin metal faucets and drains. My bathroom sink currently suffers from a peeling drain due to using harsh chemicals.
In addition to using organic chemicals for their pleasing scents, for killing bacteria, to save your clothes and protect faucets, you'll feel responsible knowing that you are doing something better for the environment. Many packages are recyclable and reusable. You won't feel torn by throwing away bottles with chemical residue in them, and you won't be putting chemicals into the ground that can get leached into the soil.
Organic cleaners can be a great benefit. If you aren't convinced, try replacing just one of your favorite chemicals for an organic cleaner. Start with a window cleaner, and get your kids involved in the task. Or, start by substituting your all-purpose cleaner with a scented one that will do the same job. If you like the results, then maybe it's time for you to make the switch and live organically.
