Mistakes are an unavoidable part of life. None of us are granted perfection and, therefore, we can be certain that we will make errors during the course of our lifetimes which will affect both ourselves and others. The important key when assessing these occurrences is to remember that wise individuals can always learn from their indiscretions and moral transgressions. The willingness to gain a new knowledge and understanding of our lapses in judgment can only help to serve our desire to become better people. This undertaking can be accomplished in several beneficial ways.
-Do not dwell on the past
Dwelling upon our past failures is an unhealthy practice which only intensifies feelings of guilt, shame, and lack of self-worth. The majority of individuals make a mistake, feel the undesirable effects, and vow to never again repeat the behavior because the emotional pain is far too great. These incidences remain in the forefront of our minds because their effects make a lasting impression upon us. However, we can and must use that to our advantage in order to prevent similar errors and move forward, without the unnecessary burden of additional negative feelings about ourselves. Therefore, learn from the past, but do not live there.
-Accept your imperfections
Remembering at all times that there is not one human being on the face of the earth who is perfect in any way, shape, or form is essential. Life does not provide us with an instruction manual, so we will not always choose the correct course of action in every situation that presents itself. The simple acceptance of this fact can be a tremendous growth experience. We are able to grow toward the betterment of ourselves when we accept the reality that perfection will never be attainable, yet progress is always possible.
-Take an objective approach to assessment
Assessing our past need not be an opportunity to cause ourselves to feel worse than we already do regarding our mistakes. It certainly should not be used as a chance to beat ourselves up unfairly or harshly. Rather, we should take the approach of addressing certain questions regarding each instance. For example, what was I feeling during that period of time? What circumstances were present which may have prompted me to take a wrong turn or make an inappropriate decision? The answers may shed some light on the causes and conditions surrounding the mistake, and at the same time, bring about self-forgiveness.
The quest to become a better person is indeed a lifelong endeavor. Despite the fact that we never reach perfection, it is essential to strive for positive progress. All in all, assessing the errors that are often a frequent part of life can be a beneficial tool in assisting us in understanding ourselves and our motivations.
