When purchasing magic tricks there a definately a few things you should consider.
First thing is first...is it worth the money. The magic industry has completely changed in the last few years. The current fad has changed from magicians releasing complete anthologies to releasing single effect DVDs with "expert and detailed" training. What you need to consider is if one effect is worth the twenty to thirty dollars or if you'd rather take on a challenge and but an old book or series with a lot more knowledge to gain.
Second thing you have to consider is the source. There are many magicians who have been releasing effects for years and are great teachers. There are also many young magicians who don't really know what they're doing yet, they're just trying to make a quick buck. Look for the classics until you know the difference. You can always rely on Jay Sankey, Paul Harris, De'vo.
Another thing that most people look over at first is the difficulty level. If you're just starting out you don't want to force yourself into the advanced learning stuff. Read reviews before you buy something just to make sure you'll be able to handle it.
Lastly, consider whether it fits your style. Don't go buy something just because everyone else is. There are many effects that might look great, but you realize even before you buy them that they don't fit the type of magic that you do. Don't waste your money, stick to what you do best and don't change your style because there is a new effect on the market that grabbed your attention.
Magic is a great hobby and always makes for a good way to entertain. Just be smart about what it is that you're getting into. Good luck!
