At the end of last year one of the best filmmakers ever and a personal favorite of mine - Robert Altman - shuffled off this mortal coil. These films - all excellent and definitive examples of Altman's genius - must be seen by all :

1. SHORT CUTS (1993) - Ensemble interlocking stories masterpiece. Also worth reading are the Raymond Carver short stories its based on.

2. THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) - This time its Raymond Chandler as its source and Elliot Gould as a shaggy out of date Phillip Marlowe. BIG LEBOWSKI fans will love this.
3. NASHVILLE (1975) - Large cast, many stories, overlapping dialogue, fluid formation - yep thats what he does. Many would put this at #1 but ya know...
4. THE PLAYER (1992) - Just everyone in Hollywood cameos in this comic show biz murder tale. Tim Robbins adds another seminal asshole role to his resume.
5. MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER (1971) - Altman and Warren Beatty didn't get along but they still conjured up this wired western.
6. BREWSTER MCCLOUD (1970) - Damn, its not on DVD yet!
7. A WEDDING (1978) - Ensemble entanglement again.
8. M*A*S*H (1970) - A very obvious choice but couldn't be left out. Altman hated the TV series incidently.
9. 3 WOMEN (1977) - Not quite sure I understand this one but its pretty intoxicating stuff.
10. COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN (1982) - Also only on damn VHS - some say its too much like a play production but with Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, Kathy Bates, and yes even Cher passionately chatting it up count me down!
