A mother's guide for online college

As a mother, you doubtless appreciate the value of good time management. However, many mothers are so busy keeping their kids' (and sometimes spouse's) lives in order that they neglect their own. Education can be an empowering, fulfilling experience if you treat it (and yourself) right. You deserve your own time to grow and change, just like your kids. Education doesn't stop after eighteen years!

Perhaps you have decided to attend an online college, or you're just thinking about it, or you already are and want some tips on how to succeed at online college.

The top concerns of most single or married mothers attending online universities or colleges are time, money and accreditation.

COMMON QUESTIONS
1. What demands will online university make on my already-scarce free time?
One of the advantages of learning online is that you'll have much more flexibility with your schooling. Some online universities don't require you to be online at a specific time, and will let you do coursework at your own pace. Others are more structured, and do require you to participate in discussions or classes at certain times on certain days. Be sure to do your research into schools and find out which is the best fit for you time-wise. On a side note, you probably have more free time than you think! Time waiting in the car or lineups, the doctor's office, etc, can all be used for study time. If you work, you may have lunch breaks you can put towards

2. What about funding or scholarships to help pay tuition?
Most colleges and universities, even online ones, will help you get grants, loans or other funding. Another advantage comes to light here - without physical classrooms and traditional equipment to maintain, the costs of online university are often lower. Before committing to a program, be sure to inquire into funding. Some scholarships will let you apply their funding towards online universities, and there are scholarships specifically for working mothers, single mothers, women returning to university, nontraditional students, and adult students; just about every category imaginable is eligible for some sort of funding. In addition, there are some grants and funds available to almost anyone attending university - don't let your possibilities be limited by your category.

3. What is a diploma from an online university worth?

The answer varies tremendously based on the university. Some are accredited and nationally recognized, with transferable credits, and others are basement-run ripoff schemes.
