How to prevent tooth decay

Simply brushing one's teeth is not the answer to preventing tooth decay, as past generations once taught. Twice a day is not enough either. While children do not have the opportunity to brush after a school lunch, they should, as soon as they get home. Many of us, despite what we learned, don't even brush after dinner; bedtime seems to be the ritual.

If you are one of those people who are too lazy at night to brush your teeth, do not be surprised if you have a big bad breath problem. While "morning breath" is normal, because one's mouth is dry, which promotes bacteria, you don't want bacteria to breed on bacteria that is already there, because there was no night-time brushing. Bacteria causes not only gum disease, but also tooth decay, tartar and plaque. Plaque is the build-up of tartar that hardens on the teeth and tooth decay creates a problem with tooth loss and future problems.

Fluoride treatments help children until age 14. Nowadays, many people will believe that athere is enough fluroide in the water to not need extra fluroide, but many dentists will disagree. Also, there are not many children are even cognizant of flossing. They are not encouraged, but little do they know, that that will aide in the prevention of tooth decay. Flossing also helps to eliminate breath odor by removing food particles between the teeth. Brushing your tongue also helps in removing bacteria, the source of tooth decay. Even chewing gum helps remove food, if you can't brush.

Having the teeth cleaned twice a year, by a dental hygienist keeps the mouth clean. For some, they may need it three times a year, to have that clean feeling and to prevent gum disease if prone to that. If your gums bleed, having a cleaning three or four times a year imay be just as important as flossing.

Remember, there are good habits, and brushing, using mouthwash to prevent bacteria, and using other mouth rinses, are good habits. Once you start, it should be second-nature. And don't wait until your child is entering kindergarten to take them to the dentist for the first time. Don't let babies go to sleep with a bottle, or their teeth will rot, and teach your children what is important. You wouldn't teach them not to shower or bathe regularly, would you? Well, good oral hygiene is just as important! A great smile brings confidence and adds to one's looks, and a clean mouth, might just land you your new job! Don't offend anyone, because if you do, you are only embarassing yourself!
