When my friend told me her new "purple" Dyson vacuum cleaner that she got for Christmas was the best vacuum to buy, I was skeptical at first. When she showed me how the Dyson vacuum picked up the animal fur in her carpet, I was sold! I absolutely LOVE my Dyson vacuum cleaner. I've owned Electrolux, Hoover, Dirt Devil, and Kenmore. I also have a Rainbow, and for a long time after I got my Dyson, I didn't even touch it. I find it is just so much easier to empty the Dyson canister than to have to go through the thing with the muddy water, the cleaning of the motor every time you use the Rainbow, and the heavy, cumbersome unit and its attachments. And while both the Dyson and the Rainbow eliminate the need for vacuum bags, which is a savings, I find the Dyson is far more compact and takes less time to set up for vacuuming and put away afterward.
Virtually everything is compartmentalized on the Dyson... the wand, the upright vacuum for carpets and bare floors, and three of the attachments. I have an additional floor attachment and a motorized mini-brush unit for upholstery and tight spots, and As the "mother" of two long-haired cats, I really use that mini-brush! The Dyson is great for containing the dust, trash, and fur it picks up - I simply empty the canister into an outdoor garbage can. As someone with lots of allergies, this is a real plus! I can see in the clear canister what the Dyson vacuum cleaner picks up - and I'm astounded. To empty the canister, you simply remove it from the vacuum unit, and then all you do is pull a trigger and drop the contents into a trash bag or other plastic bag, like a recycled grocery bag.
The Dyson vacuum cleaner is now our "upstairs vacuum" because most of the flooring there is carpeted, and the Dyson is great on carpets. I use my Rainbow downstairs on the hardwoods and save lugging any vacuum up and down the stairs. I bought my Dyson at our local Sears store - on sale - I think I paid almost $500. Since I bought my Dyson vacuum cleaner about 5 years ago, the company has improved the design, and they now they have a model called the Dyson Ball, which swivels on what looks like an oversized ball bearing. I can see where this would be a great improvement, as the head of my Dyson vacuum (with the beater brush) is fairly wide and won't go in some of the nooks and crannies I need to reach (I use the motorized mini-brush attachment).
A quick search for Dyson vacuum cleaners revealed that even with the improvements, prices have stayed fairly close to $500 or a little less. Watching for sales could get you an even better bargain on the Dyson model of your choice. My Dyson animal vacuum cleaner was well worth the money, and when it wears out someday, I will most likely buy another. By that time, the folks at Dyson will probably have figured out how to have their vacuum cleaners run themselves!
