In the United States today, there are over 9 million businesses owned by women. However, the harsh reality is that they receive the least amount of financial support from the traditional lending sources, i.e. banks and venture capital entities. One of the key reasons for this lack of financing is due to the fact that women typically own smaller businesses requiring $250,000 or less in financial assistance. Suffice it to say, this limits the financing options that are available.
The other side of the coin is that loans used to create a business are typically predicated by collateral and excellent credit histories, which at times can be a difficult proposition for a woman. This, at times, can lead to an error in financial judgment wherein the woman will borrow money from family members and/or max out their credit cards. The result is that their own personal finances become uncomfortable, having compromised their financial position in the process.
The irony is that financing a business start-up should not be as gender sensitive as it has become. Grants for starting a business should be easy to procure whether you are male or female. By not being able to procure a business grant to start up your business, you are missing out on what could be your golden opportunity.
