The appeal and addiction of role playing games

The avatars in these games, called toons by the players, are extremely customizable. You can have any color of hair, eyes, skin, tattoos, features of various different dynamics, even a wide variety of clothing to encase their toons in. These games allow the character that previously was only visualized in the minds of the D&D player onto the screen so they can see how it looks, who they become. Now, they are still computer based games, so there are various restrictions to what all can be done in these worlds, but those limitations are being stretched and removed every day as the newer and newer patches, updates, and versions come out.

Now, the theme of this article is the appeal and addiction of roleplaying games, and it is an addiction. Players have been known to clock days full of playtime, ignoring spouses, children, work, and other activities, grabbing bites to eat and drinks of soda inbetween massive battles and when waiting for new zones to load on the computer. Hordes of gamers spending all weekend at conventions playing marathon games of tabletop rpgs, from the original D&D system to the new 4th edition rules, and all the various competitors out there. The appeal like I said before is obvious, the escapism, but as with anything, it can be done too much. What is too much D&D? How many hours is too long playing WoW? The answer to that varies from individual to individual, but if you have never tried a roleplaying game, I certainly invite you to give it a try. One thing I do know, there may be no set amount that is too much Role-Playing Games in a person's life, but I know there is such a thing as too little. People need the ability to escape and take on another persona for just a little while. Pick up a roleplaying game and gather a bunch of friends and delve where only the heroes of fantasy have dared to go before. Grab your dice and GAME ON!
