A great marriage is comprised of two imperfect people who are perfect for each other. They know one another, faults and all, but they accept each other just the same. Sometimes, they even see what some people consider faults and look at them much differently, as assets that help to balance one another out. Where one tends to be a workaholic, the other is quite content to relax and have fun. Alone, either of these qualities may be negative, but when you put the two together, you have a great partnership. There are several other things that a truly wonderful marriage will have. The most important are trust, appreciation, communication, and forgiveness.
TRUST
A marriage where there is no trust between the two partners will never be satisfying and will rarely even last. You end up with people who are throwing around accusations, incessant questions, and resentments. Bitterness will take root and life will become a never-ending argument. Where there is trust, people are typically more apt to want to keep that trust and prove to the other party that they are deserving of it. Insecurities are much fewer and therefore, life is much more peaceful.
APPRECIATION
Everybody wants to feel appreciated and in a good marriage, both the husband and the wife know that they are. Each contribute differently to the relationship and family and both know that what the other does is just as important as what they themselves do. If you are already married, be sure and let your spouse know that you are thankful for what they do. It goes a long way in encouraging him or her to do those things more often.
COMMUNICATION
Effective communication, where both parties are expressing themselves and understanding their mate, is important to a good marriage. Without communication, the two will end up dealing with misunderstandings continuously. Neither will know what the other one wants or needs, so there will be little or no satisfaction or feeling of fulfillment for either. Skillful communication can be learned, but it may take a third party to run interference for a while.
FORGIVENESS
There are no perfect people, as was stated in the beginning, so forgiveness will be necessary for a great marriage. Forgiveness is what will allow you to move on after a mistake is made and not keep going back to the offense. It is also what will keep your own misjudgments from being thrown back at you in following disagreements. Forgiveness is really one of the most important keys to a happy home.
Great marriages take work, but they are one of the most worthwhile investments you will ever make. They will be with you for the rest of your days, giving you the benefit of a partner and friend for life. With trust, communication, appreciation, and forgiveness, you can have a healthy, successful relationship with your spouse that will be a blessing to your entire family.
