The best fountain pens on the market

With all the different types of pens on the market, finding the right one may require some work. There is only one type of pen that bestows it's owner with a sense of prestige and gives the appearance of higher status and that pen is the fountain pen. Indeed the fountain pen is the Cadillac of pens and many are many years old. But what makes them so different? What makes them so special? What is the best fountain pen and who makes them? These are just a few questions that I will help you answer.

What makes the fountain pen so different? Fountain pens use ink cartridges that contain a water based ink (whereas other pens contain a thicker ink and have a built-in ink reservoir). This special ink allows it to be drawn through the nib (the part of the pen that comes in contact with the paper) and delivered to the paper through capillary action. When the ink is gone, the cartridge can be replaced by another filled one.

What makes them so special? The way the fountain pen is made allows it to have quite a few very unique qualities. First, since the ink is drawn to the paper it requires no pressure to write. This characteristic is appealing to those who with conditions such as arthritis who can't use ball-point pens due to the pressure they require to work. Also, since they have replaceable ink cartridges they last lifetimes longer than other pens (although most are reusable, disposable versions are manufactured). Some pens are passed down in families and many collect fountain pens for their history as pieces of art. Another great quality of the fountain pen is the style in which is writes. Fountain pens are also known for producing very expressive writing and are also very useful in calligraphy.

What is the best fountain pen? This question largely depends on the purpose for which you are purchasing the pen. If you are a collector, older pens with very decorative designs and history are your best bet. Luxury pens are available through manufacturers such as Montblanc, Cartier, and Waterman. These pens vary in prices, but can range from tens of dollars to hundreds of dollars. Can't spend that much on a pen? Don't worry, other makers such as Swisher and Parker can be found for just $10-$20. The kind of pen that's best for you just depends on you needs. Do you want it to have a steel, silver, or gold nib? What type of quality do you want? Do you want a disposable one or reusable one? Once these questions are answered you will no doubt be able to find the pen the best suites your needs.

No matter what kind you decide on, once fact remains: fountain pens are timeless classics that are sure to never grow out of style. Whether it is a $4000 Waterman or a $10 disposable, the fountain pen is sure to please even the pickiest of writers. They display an elegance that can never be matched by a ballpoint, computer, or pencil and are a wise investment in any situation.
