Moving into a home or apartment can be a time of hope and inspiration, depending on the reason for moving. Families may be up-sizing to accommodate a growing family or maybe the kids have flown the coop and it makes sense to downsize. College graduates are eager to make an independent move or perhaps a family has to relocate due to a job change or divorce. Whatever the situation, there are a couple of tried and true housewarming gifts to consider.
Most apartment dwellings have either a patio or deck for outdoor living. Arrange a planting of herbs for cooking, or seasonal flowers in a pot to adorn these areas and offer a garden feeling. If your friends are moving into a house with a yard, consider a tree or climbing vine to plant for them. This gift will remind them each year of their new home and can serve as a benchmark each year of how long they have lived there. Pansies, and herbs like thyme, basil and rosemary are good choices for garden pots. These flowers and herbs will provide beauty and functionality, as they are all edible. Flowering cherry trees, climbing hydrangea or clematis vines can be considered as they will grow year after year.
When the work of moving is done, everyone is tired and sore. Creating a basket to warm hungry stomachs will be a respite for weary movers. Second-hand stores have many inexpensive baskets that can be filled simply. Water bottles and fruit placed next to a nightstand is always appreciated. Other items can be added to enhance the first night experience. A lighthearted movie, a box of candy, a sweet-smelling candle and a miniature vase of dried lavender can really make the first night special.
Sometimes your friends will be so exhausted, they'll want to take a break from it all. Get them gift certificates at a local restaurant and movie theater. They will enjoy having some free time before they need to return to the task of unloading boxes and organizing things.
These simple ideas will allow you to show how much you care for your friends, but many times you don't have to get a housewarming gift at all. Offering to help on moving day will be gift enough. Taking pictures on moving day can also be its own gift. Printing pictures is relatively inexpensive, and your friends will be delighted to look back on these photos years from now.
Moving day can be stressful and exhausting, but having friends and family who care is the best gift of all.
