A sudden summer shower
Sends us dashing for the door,
Me with my small daughters,
Together we make four.
After reaching safety
I turn around to see
That absolutely no one
Has been following me.
I think, "They soon will be here",
But wait for them in vain
Til happy shouts and laughter
Sound clearly through the rain.
Fear is my first instinct;
What if they take a chill?
I don't want my treasures
Feverish and ill.
Irritation has its moment
As I stomp back through the wet.
My hair's already soggy
And I haven't found them yet.
Then as I round the corner,
Three faces look at me,
Eyes shining with adventure,
Lips curving up with glee.
My anger melts away;
What am I to do?
It looks like so much fun.
I think I'll splash in, too!

From childhood delight to adult gloom;
The puddles
