Far out west is where my heart was won
next to a pickling cactus in the midday sun.
It was a day when not a lizard stirred
not a buzzard cackled not a sound was heard.
I was planning on collecting some wild peyote
when out of the brush sauntered a coyote.
His hackles were rising as he looked me in the eye,
I thought my number was up and it was my time to die.
My vision was melting and my knees started to shake
as a deep howling noise that creature began to make.
My stomach churned as I recoiled in worry and fright
when along came a rugged cowboy recognising my plight.
Leaping from his horse he pulled his gun from its holster
and with all of the confidence and power he could muster
he pointed it at the beast, but didn't pull the trigger
as his sentiment was strong and his understanding bigger.
He spoke to the coyote in a voice soft and mellow
telling it that now it was time to choose to stay or go.
With that it turned tail and fled out to the horizon
and to this day I've never seen a sight so surprising.
That cowboy put me on his horse and rode us to matrimony
and I've never wanted more than my coyote scarring honey.
At nights I listen to the beating of his heart and the whippoorwill
and his strength and vigour still gives me a thrill.

Out west we have
A history all our own
We took this land
(Some say stole)
And made it our home.
It started with "Manifest Destiny"
