"Working Class Pedestrian"

For now, I'm a pedestrian
And dependent where I roam...
Oh, not to have a workplace
That's five miles from my home!

The stories I could tell you
Are enough to fill a book,
Even though most passers-by
Don't give me a second look

I've been asked for gas money
And been propositioned twice,
Mistaken for a prostitute...
Every day I roll the dice!

I'm very few paychecks away
From owning my own ride,
But that doesn't help this morning,
With my right thumb as my guide

Ah, here comes a pleasant fellow
In his Beamer, bright in red...
"I'm heading for the factory..."
"Well, hop on in," he said

So now he'll relate his story
Of his kids and trophy wife
He's a doctor, she's a lawyer...
It's the story of my life

He reminds me of my failures,
In a less-than-subtle way
He asks me where I went to school,
But there's little I can say

Yes, just a couple pay days
And my life will be fine
Be it Cavalier or Kia...
At least it will be mine

And, thus, I end my story,
And in parting, my good chum,
If you see me and you need a ride
So be it, raise your thumb.
