"Call of Cthulu" isn't well known in mainstream yet there are so many portrayals of it; whether it be obvious or not. For example, Stephen King has a short story called "Crouch End" that involves some creatures from "Call of Cthulu" such as Yogsoggoth, Nrtsen Nyarlahotep, and the great Cthulu itself making an appearance. The movie, "Hellboy" had a similar creature to Cthulu in it the creature locked in "space" in a crystallized prison with huge tentacles and the vessel that it came out of was the priest.
What is "Call of Cthulu"? It's a fantasy series written by H.P. Lovecraft which was turned into a table top game and also a video game.
The table top game version is interesting to play. The Game Master/Story Teller (GM/ST) will tell you before you start that the object of the game really is for your character to either go insane or die in a violent manner. They will also tell you that most creatures your character will come across are far too strong for you to kill and therefore you will most likely lose against them hence either going insane or dying.
It seems that Call of Cthulu wasn't just created by Lovecraft but Clark Ashton Smith with his Hyperborean Cycle; creatures existing before dinosaurs in Greenland. Some creatures were created by Lovecraft but it seems that other authors created some as well. Brian Lumley created Cthulu creatures in his Titus Crow stories.
Most Cthulu games take place during the 1920s or 1930s. Why? That's an uncertainty really but I suppose it's because life was changing everywhere during that time with the Industrial era, people travelling abroad more often, and so on. There are some Cthulu games that take place in more modern days however that would mean that your character(s) would be more aware of a "weird" situation that will be happening in the near future or is happening.
What sort of creatures come out to play in Call of Cthulu? Creatures thought to be made in outer space, shapeless but really having shape. A creature like Tsathoggua a toad god from Voormi. Yhoundeh an elk goddess, Nyarlathotep an avatar of the Outer Gods, Aphoom-Zhah; which looks like a grey flame, Arwassa; looks like a inhuman like banshee always flying and wailing, Atlach-Nacha; a god that has a human head on a huge spiders body, Baoht Z'uqqa-Mogg; a huge flying scorpion beast, and so on. The list of Cthulu mythos creatures is a long one. It's very similar to Roman and Greek myths where there's not only a list of "gods" but a list of "Cthulu" citizens/elders.
