Poetry: Difficult people

by Rachel Howells

Created on: April 14, 2009   Last Updated: November 19, 2010

Difficult people are drawn to me
They sense my weakness of passivity
They're hyenas out for an easy kill
I'm a deer terrorized by their predatory shrill

They pick up the panicked signal I send out
And encircle me with sanctimonious clout
Master manipulators hunt me down with ingenuity
And overpower me with superficial flattery

They trick me with a compassionate ear
And ease me into believing they're sincere
Once privy to regret and remorse
They take hostage of my Trojan horse

Coax with a kind smile and sympathetic word
Then dig in and tell others what they've heard
Talking lips on the backside of their heads
Twisting heartfelt confessions into juicy internet threads

Gnawing, poking, prodding – craving absolute control
Should they rip me apart slowly or swallow me whole?
They approach and retreat in their menacing dance
Until finally I come undone and take away their chance
