I believe that personal values make up who a person really is. There are many people who pretend to be someone else so they can get more people to like them, but eventually people will see who they really are. I have seen friendships and relationships end this way. At first they might seem like the best person in the world, but then they find out who that person really is and things go bad. There are also times where you see a person for who they are and you want a friendship/relationship with them, but in the process of getting to know each other better, they change to make you like them better. This is also bad because since you already like them for who they are, them trying to change may just make you not like them anymore. Don't confuse compromise with change here. Yes, people should make compromises in a relationship, but when I'm talking about change, I'm talking about changing their personal values. Below are some of my personal values and how they affect me.
Respect: I wasn't always who I am now. As a kid, I did some stupid things and would get myself into trouble. I'm not sure what changed me, but I feel like I'm the exact opposite of who I was then. I now have respect for myself and others. I treat others the way I want to be treated. I believe that by doing this, it makes the world that much nicer to live in. If someone is mean to someone, that person is likely to be mean back to them. It's human nature to want revenge, but I always try to be nice to people even if they aren't to me. It also feels better to be nice rather than mean.
Caring, Selflessness, Loyalty: I also care about people, especially my friends and family. There are people I see who might need something more than I do, let it be food, some money, etc. and I try to help them. I usually put others before myself because I would rather see them happy than to suffer. I always try to be here especially for my friends. Though I may not be as social as some people, I at least consider myself a good listener. There are many times where my friends come to me for comfort, or when they just want someone to talk to. I try to help them the best I can, but sometimes just being there and listening to what they have to say is enough for them. Sometimes I feel useless because I can't relate to the situation, but at least I know I was able to help. After everything I have been through with my friends, I really feel like I couldn't live without them. I feel like I wouldn't be who I am today if it weren't
