Movie reviews: The Passion of the Christ

I was not brought up to be religious - thank God. I see religious people as people more self deceived than others because they actually believe they have a relationship with God, but very few or none of them walk on water. At least I have done a few miracles. So when Mel Gobson's movie came out I was curious like everyone else and hopeful it was a truly good film about Jesus. What a huge dissapointment the movie turned out to be.

Why in heaven's name would anyone, Atheist or not, want to watch a man being flogged and beaten over and over again? There is absolutely no value that can be gained by watching sadistic violence no matter who is being beaten. In fact focus exclusively on the beating of Jesus is tempting us to glorify and worship the brutal beating of any human being - as some people actually do.

Why then do humans have this obsessive desire to crucify Jesus all over again? The bible scripture states it is a sin to crucify Jesus over again, yet this is what this movie does.

The more we focus on bad the less we focus on good. The miracles of Jesus and his meeting with the disciples and ascension are rated as virtually irrelevant if we rate the beating of Jesus as more important.

Mel Gibson's movie had all the sophistication of going to watch a wrestling or boxing match.

Also Mel Gibson seems to think Jesus had a great relationship with his mother. In one scene Jesus is very flirtatious with his mother and almost lusts after her, cuddling her from behind! For all we know Mary resented the fact Jesus was some kind of Midwich Cuckoo and not really one of their children and treated him coldly. Though the flirtation with his mother was done tastefully, I find I am not happy that all makers of Jesus movies have a too-strict sense of the ideal behaviour of Jesus.

God had to sin and commit adultery with Mary - she was already betrothed - in order to have Christ on earth. Very few Christians are willing to consider that that is the truth of the matter.

Jesus had to be the perfect sacrificial lamb but that does not mean he was not tempted with sexual sin. Maybe the bible left out his years from 12 to 30 as 'best not to mention them at all' years? Like an embarrassing episode might be left from an autobiography. So 'The Last Temptation of Christ' in my book was a far better movie than The Passion of the Christ and is probably the best movie ever made about Jesus, except for Church movies that focus on him teaching.

Jesus himself said in reply to a man 'Why do you call
