Living with your significant other

Moving in with your significant other can be one of the most stressful things you will ever encounter during your life; be it after you have been with that particular person for many years or are just in that honeymoon year.

Considering the benefits of such an action this would seem like the obvious choice to make. For instance you will (or should) have two incomes now going into your household, your relationship is ever moving along that 'next step' chart and generally you find that if you can live together you can spend a lot more time enjoying each other's company. For some this is the best feeling in the world. However. Do not fall into the trap of moving in with your significant other just to either save your relationship or out of necessity. If you ever feel the need to live together for anything other than you just want to share each other's lives or be around each other more then it is a bad idea.

Living with a partner that you are not prepared to actually live with can be a very daunting task. Hair will be left in sinks, toilet seats are left up, the other half's dog just fouled your shoes and you never have any milk anymore. Now you might think that these sort of things happen regardless of whether people live together through need or want you will discover the main difference between people liking or disliking living together is that the people who enjoy living together deal with these things together. On the other hand those who turn out not to enjoy living together start the arguing...

Now that said it does not mean that couples who co-exist will not argue about living together. It is a safe bet that anyone living together will eventually yell at each other or get somewhat annoyed with each other's presence. It depends on what environment people grow up in, but you find that most people like to have time to themselves or with their friends (separate from their partners of course). The main issue with couples living together is... Drum roll please... They live together! Fair enough that is not the most difficult of results to come up with but the main fact of any issue between couples is that they are in each other's living environment.

Everyone needs time to themselves. We all do. However when you live with your significant other time to yourself seems less and less. Even if there is no change to what you do with your day there will always be a time when you feel like you need thirty minutes to yourself and you can't due to the fact you said you would do the dishes or that you are both spending the night in or out. Before anyones relationship people have specific slots of time in their lives; me time, family time, work/education time, friend time and chores time. Having a completely new 'us time' can be very unsettling especially if that works it's way into your living area.

The happiest of co-existing couples will find that the reason they do so well together is that they manage to get their variety of time slots in their lives to work around the new and very profound 'us time'. There are less arguments between the couples due to the fact they are no in constant contact with each other, therefore they enjoy the time they have together rather than waste it.

The fact is unless you can both fit each of your respective hobbies, interests and lifestyles in a manageable way together with each other then co-existence with your partners may eventually become your own personal nightmare.
